December Recap!

December at The Forager School emphasized student well-being, the changing season as observed in nature (the awakening mushrooms and cooling weather!), a handful of specialty presentations from parent volunteers, and, as always, a variety of inspiring art, music, foraging, and seasonal cooking projects.

A particular highlight was our exploration of physical health and well-being during an informative visit from local RCMS primary care provider and Forager parent, Dr. Afsoon! Dr. Afsoon shared insights with students about wellness, anatomy, and body functions. Using visual aids from her own medical textbook, students explored key areas of anatomy, including body tissues and the unique ways bodies communicate basic needs—from the brain to physical reactions like coughing, sneezing, headaches, stomach aches, chills, and fevers. We also learned how to protect ourselves and others from germs, and the difference between viral and bacterial infections. To top it off, we sang the classic preschool anatomy song “Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes” in both English and Spanish!

Our December curriculum also encouraged moments of mindfulness, focusing on familial traditions and cultural practices to deepen students’ awareness of winter as a time for peace and restoration. Parents shared specialty foods, stories, and cultural practices with our classes. We enjoyed learning about Hanukkah while sampling freshly prepared latkes, listened to a beautiful winter solstice story while savoring fluffy warm ‘sun-bread,’ and helped prepare a delicious and nutritious miso ramen piled high with nourishing toppings.

We culminated learning with an all school winter celebration, with nature crafting, face-painting, creative dress-up galore, and the sharing of a seasonal potluck. Students performed their favorite winter songs, and joyfully presented their families with a hand-made (and wrapped !) gift! It was a lovely end to our fall semester!
