Our Lunar New Year Celebration (Forager-Style)

In February Forager students explored lunar new year traditions around the globe and participated in a lively lunar new year themed family day festival complete with steamed dumplings, hóngbāo and wooden coin decoration (red envelopes), a student-lead percussion group and massive student-made dragon puppet dance!

Earlier in the week we were very fortunate to host a visit with community member Su Ling to learn about her experiences from childhood celebrating the lunar new year in China. Su Ling prepared a delightful series of activities including sampling an array of traditional Chinese snacks, experimenting with the use of chopsticks to try and pick up mini-marshmallows, a folktale story-time to learn about the origins of the holiday brought to life by a specialty puppet show with beautiful and delicate traditional Chinese hand puppets. During the celebration students were very proud to dance in their own hand-made dragon puppet (crafted from recycled materials), share in the joy of dumpling making and munching, tangerine exchanges, and lots of gleeful salutations “gung hay fat choy!”.
